Majuli to pay tribute to Bhupen Hazarika :
Post Bureau, Jorhat (Sept 4): In 1968, the then
Assam Sahitya Sabha president Late Ananda Chandra Baruah honoured music
maestro Bhupen Hazarika with the title, “Hudhakantha”, at a programme
held at Banshi Gopal Natya Mandir in Majuli.
Now, the residents of Majuli, the world’s largest river island, is
all set to pay its tribute to the great musician by organising an
All-Assam Bhupendra Sangeet Competition at Kamalabari on October 6.

Play to highlight danger Majuli faces:

Chang Ghar or house on stilts :
Majuli in Upper Assam is more than just ‘the world’s largest river island.’ It is the hub of a unique sect of Hinduism thriving in Assam for centuries. The Mising tribe of Majuli, Assam, like many others in the region builds their houses on stilts.
Three suspected of witchcraft missing in MAJULI :
Three members of a family who were missing, were suspected to have been killed for allegedly practising witchcraft at Majuli in Assam's Jorhat district.

NEW DELHI, May – The first phase project envisaged for protection of Majuli Island from flood and erosion being executed by Brahmaputra Board is scheduled to be completed by the current fiscal, the UPA Government has claimed.
Erosion threat to Majuli forest :
Jorhat : The first manmade forest in Majuli, which the Jorhat forest department is hoping to develop into a full-fledged forest in order to declare it as the first reserve forest on the Brahmaputra island, is facing severe threat from erosion.
Akademi awards for works on Mising, Bodo & Sattriya literatures :
Narayan
Chandra Goswami, Sattradhikar (head priest) of Natun Kamalabari Sattra
of Majuli, have been awarded Bharatiya Bhasa Samman by Sahitya Akademi
for their contribution to enrich the language and culture.
The
religious leader has so far written 14 books, that too on topics of
Sattriya culture and literature of Sankardeva,despite having no formal
education. Some of his books are also used as reference by students
pursuing MA in Assamese literature.
